Site locatorWhat a weed and seed washdown is
A weed and seed washdown is the cleaning of a vehicle, trailer or item of plant so it carries no soil, plant material, seed or animal matter from one property to the next. It exists because weed seed and soil-borne pathogens travel on tyres, chassis rails, tracks, mudguards and radiators far more efficiently than they travel on their own. Parthenium, giant rat's tail grass, fire ants and Panama disease have all spread along road and access networks this way.
A washdown is generally required before entering agricultural land under a land access agreement, before moving between properties or regions, when leaving a declared pest or biosecurity zone, when mobilising plant to a gas, mining or renewables site, and whenever a landholder's or operator's biosecurity plan says so. Many Queensland and New South Wales access agreements require one for every entry, not just the first.
The wash itself usually covers the underbody, wheel arches, tyres and tread, radiator and grille, tray or deck, tool boxes, and any attachments or implements. Attended facilities will often work to a written standard; self-service bays leave the standard to the driver, which is why the certificate matters.
A vehicle hygiene certificate should show the vehicle or plant identifier, the date and time of the wash, where the wash was carried out, who carried it out and their declaration, the areas cleaned, and the property or site the vehicle is cleared to enter. If it cannot be produced at the gate it does not count — which is the single most common reason a vehicle is turned around.
How to prepare for a washdown inspection
Ring ahead. Not every bay takes every vehicle — check the size class it handles and whether livestock trailers are accepted before you commit to the drive. Attended facilities often keep set hours, and remote bays can be out of service without notice.
Empty the vehicle first. Loose soil in the tray, in tool boxes and around the spare wheel is what fails an inspection, not the paint. Remove implements and attachments so they can be washed separately, and open access panels so the wash can reach the chassis.
Allow proper time. A ute is quick; a float, a low loader or a tracked machine is not. Underbody and tracks take the longest and are the first thing an inspector looks at.
Capture the evidence at the bay, not later. Photographs of the cleaned underbody and wheels, the date and time, the location and the name of the person who did the wash are what make a certificate defensible weeks afterwards. Have the certificate on the phone before you reach the gate — reception at the gate is usually worse than reception at the wash bay.
